Where to Stay Downtown (Fremont)
A few miles north of the Strip, downtown is the original Las Vegas: neon-lit, walkable, and friendlier on the wallet. Stay here and you trade megaresort polish for lower table minimums, a tight cluster of historic casinos, and the free light show overhead on Fremont Street.
Updated June 2026
If the Strip is the new Las Vegas, downtown is the original one — the few square blocks where it all started, now strung under the canopy of the Fremont Street Experience. Rooms tend to run cheaper than their Strip counterparts, the casinos sit shoulder to shoulder so you can bar-hop on foot, and the dealers and bartenders still trade in old-school personality. It is louder, grittier and more genuinely Vegas than the polished resorts to the south.
Downtown suits the value-minded gambler, the night owl who wants neon and live bands within a block, and anyone who likes their Vegas a little weathered and a lot more walkable. It is less ideal if you have your heart set on a Bellagio-style spa pool, brand-name shopping or a roster of Cirque shows — for that, stick to the Strip side of our where-to-stay guide. For the full lay of the land down here, see our Downtown & Fremont neighborhood guide.
Where to book downtown

The case for going downtown
Three good reasons to point your suitcase north of the Strip.
- Lower table minimums. Downtown is where you still find $5 and even $1 blackjack at fair 3:2 payouts — a rarity on the Strip, where $5 tables usually carry worse odds. Your bankroll simply lasts longer here.
- Cheaper, more walkable. Room rates generally run below comparable Strip hotels, and everything is clustered within a few neon-lit blocks instead of spread across a two-mile boulevard, so you walk rather than trek.
- The free show overhead. The Fremont Street Experience runs free light-and-sound shows on its giant Viva Vision canopy every night, plus live bands on open-air stages — a constant party you are staying right inside of.
A perfect downtown night
From check-in to last call, all of it within a short walk.
- Drop your bags at the Golden Nugget or the D and grab a cheap, fair-odds table at El Cortez a couple of blocks east.
- Walk the Fremont Street Experience as the sun drops, catching a live band on one of the free stages.
- Time your stroll for the top of the hour, when the Viva Vision canopy lights up overhead — one of our favorite free things to do in Vegas.
- Slip a few blocks south to the Arts District for craft beer, cocktails and a quieter, hipper crowd (grab a rideshare after dark).
- Close the night back under the neon with a nightcap at the Golden Gate or the Plaza's carousel bar before the short walk home.

Common questions
Is it better to stay on the Strip or downtown in Las Vegas?
It depends on what you want. Downtown (Fremont Street) is cheaper, more walkable, has lower table minimums and an old-school neon vibe, which suits value-minded gamblers and night owls. The Strip has the big megaresorts, luxury pools, brand-name shopping and most of the major shows. Many visitors split their trip or stay on the Strip and visit downtown for a night.
Which downtown Las Vegas hotel is best?
The Golden Nugget is the most polished and resort-like downtown, with a famous shark-tank pool. Circa is the newest and is adults-only (21+). The D and Plaza are lively and budget-friendly right on Fremont Street, the Golden Gate is the historic small option, and El Cortez and Downtown Grand offer the cheapest gambling. Pick based on your budget and whether you want comfort, history or a party scene.
Is downtown Las Vegas cheaper than the Strip?
Generally yes. Room rates downtown tend to run below comparable Strip hotels, and the gambling is friendlier too — you can still find $5 and sometimes $1 blackjack at fair 3:2 payouts, which is rare on the Strip. Just remember that most downtown hotels still charge a daily resort fee on top of the room rate, so compare the all-in price.
Can you walk to Fremont Street from downtown hotels?
Yes. The downtown casino-hotels are clustered on or steps from the Fremont Street Experience, which is a covered pedestrian mall closed to cars. Once you check in you can walk between casinos, bars and the free light shows all night without driving. The Strip, however, is a few miles south and is best reached by rideshare or the Deuce bus.
Is the Fremont Street Experience free?
Yes. Walking the pedestrian mall, watching the Viva Vision canopy light shows (which run nightly, usually at the top of each hour) and catching the live bands on the free stages all cost nothing. Paid extras include the SlotZilla zipline that flies under the canopy, plus the bars, clubs and casinos along the way.
Is downtown Las Vegas good for families?
It can be, but with caveats. The Fremont Street Experience light shows and street performers are free fun for all ages, but the scene gets rowdy and adult after dark, and Circa is strictly 21-and-over. Families are often more comfortable at a Strip resort with a dedicated kid-friendly pool, though a daytime or early-evening visit to Fremont is easy to add on.
